Trev’nor tried to look on the bright side. At least Garth had only smashed half the city. That was something, right?

The citizens of Jashni had only gotten one bellowed warning from the enraged dragon before Garth sent a tail through the outer wall. People had been running in every possible direction since. Even Dunixan’s men had retreated from the city, not daring to get in the dragon’s way for fear of friendly fire.

Of course Garth alone couldn’t destroy half a city in a few hours. Llona and Orion had cheerfully joined in, just as mad in their own way that a friend had been hurt, and took great delight in lighting anything with a government banner on fire. If not for the storm Becca had called in, the entire city would have gone up in flames already.

Dunixan came to sit next to Trev’nor on the folding cot Sergeant Mose had set up for him. They hadn’t bothered with a tent, just a hastily erected lean-to over him so that he wouldn’t be battered by the elements while he recuperated. Trev’nor might very well be the only person dry in this entire region.

“Well,” his new ally stated, staring at the city, mouth kicked up in what might have been a smile. “I see the age old adage is true. Never upset a dragon.”

“They’re not supposed to be used in combat,” Trev’nor mourned, staring at the city glumly. It was going to take him three solid weeks to fix all of that, he just knew it.

Snorting, Dunixan put elbows to knees and leaned forward, letting that one pass without comment. “Carjettaan informs me that most of the citizens who fled went toward the coast. Sensible of them, it’s the only source for water and food nearby. I’m not quite sure what to do about them.”

“Let them be for now. They’ll find their own way back, or go to you. They don’t have many options and I’ve learned to not force people. If they come in on their own terms, it’s easier on us.” Trev’nor turned his head, regarding the very small area that held their prisoners. Maybe two hundred altogether, all under guard. That couldn’t possibly be the entirety of Jashni’s soldiers. “Where’s the rest of the enemy troops?”

“Most fled with the civilians. Some are holding out in a defensive position inside the city.” Lowering his voice a notch, Dunixan leaned in a little to confide, “I honestly think that if you give them good terms for surrender, they’d give up without a fight. They’re between a rock and a hard place right now. Riyu won’t forgive them for the loss of this city.”

Somehow that didn’t surprise Trev’nor. Bad rulers were quick to assign blame. “Let’s do that.” Blinking, he peered up at the sky as the rain slowed from a torrent to a drizzle. “That’s the third time she’s done that.”

“You mean the heavy rain?” Dunixan peered up at the sky as well, holding out a hand to catch some of the rain drops.
